You start with ten soldiers and you never stop running. The whole crowd moves as one, and you steer it left and right across three lanes with a drag, the arrow keys, or by tilting your phone.
Every few seconds a pair of gates crosses the track, each stamped with a number and an operator. Green gates build the army — +40, ×2, ×3. Red gates take it apart — −25, ÷2. You can only pass through one, so every pair is a small decision made at speed: a ×3 on the far side of the track may be worth crossing two lanes of spinning blades for, and it may not. Pick wrong late in a run and two hundred soldiers vanish in a single pass.
Past twenty-five soldiers the crowd starts fusing into bronze Brutes, and past two hundred and fifty into gold Titans, so a big army stops being a mob and becomes a column of giants. The run only ends when the count reaches zero.
What gets in your way
Blades, hammers and barriers shave soldiers off the back of the crowd. Enemy squads stand on the track and shoot back, and your army returns fire automatically — more soldiers means more rifles, so the army that survives the gates is also the army that wins the fights. Every so often the road clears and a war wave rolls in, or a boss with a health bar plants itself in the lane. Weapon pods swap the whole crowd onto miniguns, shotguns, lasers or rockets for a few seconds.
What is a crowd runner?
Crowd runners are a branch of the endless-runner genre. Instead of steering one character down a lane, you steer a whole crowd, and numbered gates along the track multiply, add to, subtract from or divide it. If you like endless runners, Soldier Surfer will feel familiar — the twist is that the number on screen is your health, your firepower and your score all at once.
Do I need to download anything?
No. It runs in the browser on desktop and mobile, with no download, no sign-up and no account. Your best distance, coins and power-ups are saved locally on your own device. On a phone you can add it to your home screen and it will open full screen like an app.
